Measure with Confidence
When it comes to measuring for a custom screen door, we understand this can seem like a daunting task. Where do you measure from? What if I get my measurements wrong? How do I order a completely custom size?
Don't worry! Here at Montana Screen Doors, we custom build our screen doors exactly to your specifications and we are here to help throughout every step of the process. First off, let's discuss measuring for a screen door. We highly recommend you follow our step-by-step instructions on our How to Measure page. This page will walk you through everything you need to know such as where to take your measurements from for both the width and height, and how to enter those dimensions onto our product page.
While getting your measurements as accurate as possible is very important, we want to give you peace of mind knowing that all of our doors have a built in trimming tolerance to allow for a margin of error. Let's say you order a 36 x 81 Premium Series Classic screen door. As you can see in our chart below, you can trim up to a full 1" on each side, 3/8" off the top, and 1" off the bottom without sacrificing any structural integrity of the door.
We always tell our customers that it's easy to trim wood off of your door, but it is very hard to add more wood! With that in mind, this is why we recommend selecting the largest width measurement and the tallest height measurement (if your measurements vary). The door can always be trimmed down on site to ensure your new wooden screen door fits perfectly.
Another question we get frequently is if we trim our doors given the dimensions you provide us. The answer is that we will build our door exactly to the specifications that you provide. If you are hiring a professional to install your door, it is important to order your door using the largest width and tallest height. The pros will have the necessary tools to trim your door on site if need be. However, if you are a DIY customer, we can trim the door for you to allow for an easier installation process. We have found from a great deal of customer feedback that once you have your largest width and height, subtracting an 1/8" off each side, top, and bottom is the way to go.
Once you have your measurements and know what style door you want, click on the product you desire. If your door's dimensions are a whole number, simply select those dimensions from the dropdown. If your door's dimensions include a fraction, select the closest whole number from the dropdown, and enter your exact dimensions in the Custom Dimensions & Special Instructions text box. For example, if your exact measurements are 35-3/4 x 81-1/2, you will input your dimensions like so...
That's all there is to it! Measure with confidence for your new screen door by reading our step-by-step instructions with pictures, and if you still have questions, please give us a call!
