Ordering a custom screen door is likely a purchase you have never made before. With that said, there can be a lot of questions that arise before you buy a one-of-a-kind screen door. At Montana Screen Doors, we strive to answer any question you may have and make this process as seamless as possible.

Today’s blog will walk through some frequently asked questions regarding what to expect upon ordering a custom screen door.

•Question: Do you charge extra for custom sizes?

Answer: There is no upcharge for a custom size screen door! We can custom build our screen doors to the 1/16” of an inch to fulfill the custom size you need. Some oversize charges may apply for extra tall/ wide screen doors.

Question: If my dimensions are 36” x 80”, do you make the door exactly to this size or do you trim it down?

Answer: We will make the door to your exact specifications. However, if you are a DIY installer, please let us know and we can take an 1/8” off each side, top, and bottom of these measurements to make the installation process easier (resulting in a 35-3/4” x 79-3/4”). If you are hiring a contractor/ handyman to install your wood screen door, then order the door exactly as a 36” x 80” because the installer will have the proper tools to trim this door down on site if need be.

Question: Do you make preparations for hardware or paint/ stain the door before you ship?

Answer: We do not make any preparations for hardware or paint/ stain on our end. Reason being, nearly all of our doors are custom made-to-order and if the door needs to be trimmed on site to ensure a perfect fit, this would ruin any pre-existing paint/ stain job.

Question: How long will it take to receive my custom screen door?

Answer: Writing this blog on May 13, 2020, we are currently operating with a 4 week lead time given our current product schedule and the enhanced safety protocols we are following amidst the COVID 19 pandemic. We are limiting the number of builders in our shop at one time to maintain 6 feet apart during the entire door building process. Clicking on any style door will show you the exact availability. Once your door(s) ship from our workshop, we will send you the tracking information.

Question: How many hinges do I need for my custom size screen door?

Answer: This will depend on the height of your door. For doors up to 89”, three hinges will suffice. However, if your door is 90” or taller, we recommend using four hinges to support the weight of the door and prevent sagging.
